Conference Theme

The theme of the conference is the experience of travel, as illustrated and described by writers, artists, and illustrators. Scholars will consider both imaginary travel, as well as factual or embellished documentation of travel, undertaken by individuals or groups. To examine this theme, scholars will address a broad variety of historical eras. Although the focus of the conference is art historical, papers will also represent the fields of history, philosophy, and other areas in the humanities. Presenters from Canada, the United Kingdom, and from across the United States will be covering areas related to the theme, including the following:

  • Experiences of the ‘Grand Tour’
  • Memoirs of famous or historical figures
  • Travel books of 18th-century Britain
  • Journeys to the ‘New World’
  • Fantastical locations
  • Exploration of new continents, territories, and cultures
  • The sublime experience of nature
  • Flights of fancy in architecture
  • Caricatures of 18th and 19th-century travelers

Some papers will also highlight featured artists and works in the gallery. Visitors will have free access to the Norton’s collection, which is especially strong in nineteenth-century European and American art, as well as portraits of American leaders, Native Americans depictions, and portrayals of the American west. Some of the artists featured in the collection include: Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, Rosa Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, Auguste Rodin, François Boucher, Angelica Kauffmann, Peter Ellenshaw, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frederic Edwin Church, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Jean-Baptiste Corot, George Inness, Winslow Homer, Jean-Antoine Houdon, Charles Wilson Peale, Rembrandt Peale, E. Meissonier, Alfred Stevens, Gustave Doré, Claude Michel Clodion, a series of prints by Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and many others.
