Charles Keck was born in New York City where he studied at the Art Students
League and the National Academy of Design. From 1893-1898, he was an assistant
to the renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Soon after, he won the
Rinehart Scholarship and spent 1900-1902 at the American Academy in Rome, which
Saint-Gaudens had helped to found. After his return to America, he became widely
known for his sculptural portraits of famous Americans, largely as monuments
associated with the City Beautiful Movement of the early 20th century. In
addition to this bust of Jackson, Keck also produced a full-sized equestrian
sculpture of Stonewall Jackson for Jackson Park in the city of Charlottesville,
Virginia. Like Saint-Gaudens, he also designed coins and medals, including the
Great Seal of the state of Virginia in 1931.
