Memorial on Capitol Square. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) is best known as the
commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. His family was imbued
with the concept of service to their country. His father was the Revolutionary
War hero and Virginia governor Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, and he was also
related to Meriwether Lewis. His wife, Mary Anna Randolph Custis, was the
step-great-granddaughter of George Washington. Lee was the first cadet ever
awarded the rank of sergeant at the end of is first year at West and one of only
5 who received no demerits during his 4 years; he graduated at the head of his
class in artillery and tactics and second overall. At the outbreak of the Civil
War, he was offered command of the Union Army by President Abraham Lincoln;
however, he chose to follow his home state into the Confederacy.
