Talk Paper, The
The Talk Paper
Established in 1873, the Northwest Mounted Police were responsible for law and
order in the 2 million square miles Canada had purchased from the Hudson's Bay
Company. Despite the enormity of their charge, they took a much more
humanitarian attitude toward the Native Americans under their jurisdiction than
did their counterparts in the U.S. It was for this reason Chief Joseph attempted
to bring the Nez Perce to Canada and many of the Blood, Blackfeet, and Lakota
moved north of the border after encounters with American troops. Russell lived
briefly among the Bloods in Canada and was an admirer of the Mounties methods
and ideals, later creating several major paintings of the police force
interacting with Indians. In this work, a Mountie examines a hunting party's
permit to be away from the reservation on their search for food. Its hard to
imagine a similar picture of a solo American lawman checking the bonafides of
several braves.
