Mary Clare Jacobs
Mary Clare Jacobs
One of several children of Charles Willson Peale named for famous artists who became artists themselves, Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860) was one of the foremost portrait painters of the early American republic, his first acclaimed portrait one of George Washington painted when the artist was only 17. Besides painting many of the famous men of his time, including President Thomas Jefferson and explorer Alexander von Humboldt, Peale also immortalized young society ladies like Mary Clare Jacobs. In addition to producing more than 600 paintings, he and his brother Rubens established two of the earliest museums in America to be illuminated by gaslight.
