Winter Sunset, Rock Creek
Born in Washington D.C. to an art gallery owner, Benson Moore trained as a framer and art restorer before attending the Corcoran School of Art where he studied with three leading late 19th century landscape artists. While working as a photo-engraver, Moore built a career as a landscape painter, first in the Barbizon style but later turning more impressionistic. He was one of the founding members of the Washington Landscape Club as well as a leading wildlife painter, producing thousands of illustrations of animals, including some for the Smithsonian. However, he remains best known for his snowy scenes of the rural Washington landscape like this one.
