Plums, Grapes and Peaches
Despite the many mysteries that surround his life, Severin Roesen succeeded in forging a new aesthetic style that celebrated American abundance. His still-lifes have become so associated with 19th century American taste and interior design that Jacqueline Kennedy chose to hang several of them during her historic refurbishment of the White House and still others are displayed in the State Departments Diplomatic Reception Rooms. For most of these works, Roesen used
a heightened color palette, paying detailed attention to each piece of fruit. Scholar John Wilmerding describes his work as "an inventory of lushnesswith each of natures creations exuberant in its individuality." This luxurious style, an innovation for its time, inspired students, followers, and imitators for the rest of the century.
