Seascape
Seascape
An ethnic Serb, Alexander Dzigurski was born in the war-torn region of Backa, then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. With the support of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Dzigurski attended the School of Art in Belgrade, paying for his education by restoring iconostases at the Monastery Rakovica, and then went on to the Academy of Art in Munich. After serving in the Yugoslav Army during World War II, Dzigurski immigrated to Pennsylvania with his family in 1949, repaying their passage by painting iconostases for Pennsylvania churches. A move to California in the 1950s prompted him to paint the seascapes for which he is best-known.
