Tufted Titmice on Milkweed and Vine
Tufted Titmice on Milkweed and Vine
Like the quintessential American ornithological artist John James Audubon, Elisabeth Paxton Oliver based her paintings of birds upon careful observation in the wild and further deliberation in her studio. Having once had a work refused for exhibition because of an incorrect number of wing feathers, she strove thereafter to be as specific as possible in her depictions. Local youth in Tryon, North Carolina, where she spent the last decades of her life, often helped by bringing her specimens for her detailed realistic watercolors of various species. While her work is represented in several museums including both the Norton and the High in Atlanta, most of her paintings remain in private hands in the mid-Atlantic region.
