Rocky Mountain Scene with Bear
Rocky Mountain Scene with Bear
One of the most prominent artists of the latter Hudson River School painters,
Bierstadt exemplified the American ideal: the immigrant who came to American and
became a self-made success. Born in Prussia in 1830, Bierstadt arrived in
America at the age of 2. Though self-taught and having only a rudimentary
knowledge of painting, he began offering art lessons in 1851. He managed to make
enough money to study in Dusseldorf for 3 years, and then returned to America,
signing on with an early geological survey trip to the Rocky Mountains. With
thousands of watercolor sketches of previously unrecorded sights in hand, he set
up a studio in New York City and began producing his great landscapes of the
American West. These paintings contained large-scale scenery with dramatic
effects of light in what would seem to us today as an almost cinematic view.
