Thyangboche Monestary, Himalayan Mountains, Nepal
The Thangboche Monastery is Buddhist, though 81% of the population of Nepal is
Hindu. It is famous internationally because of its spectacular location on the
main route to the base camp of Mt. Everest where it offers the first clear view
of the highest mountain in the world. It became famous after Sir Edmund Hillary
and Tenzin Norgay made a stop there on their way to conquering Everest. Today,
more than 30,000 people a year visit the monastery which is set in Sagarmatha
National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
