Hanners, George
(1696-1740)
Collection: American Collection
Specialty: Silver
There appears to be considerable confusion over this Boston silversmith's
last name. Early records show his parents were married in 1695 as "Robert
Hannah and Hannah Matson." Birth records for his brother Thomas, in 1699,
show the parents as "Robert and Hannah Hannah." In the July 11, 1720,
edition of the Boston News-Letter, an advertisement appeared of "George
Hannah, goldsmith, at his House at t he Dock-Head Boston..." In that same
month and year, George was married to Rebecca Pierson and the records
later show the birth of their son, George, Jr., to "George and Rebekah
Hanners."

Hanners taught his son the trade; and George, Jr., carried on his father's
business until his death in 1760. The senior Hanners used two marks on his
silver pieces--the initials GH with a crown above and pellet below, all in
a shield; and his initial and surname GHANNERS in a rectangular stamp. The
latter mark was also used by his son.
