Cowell, William
(1682-1736)
Collection: American Collection
Specialty: Silver
Born in Boston, the seventh child of John and Hannah Cowell, William is
believed to have begun his apprenticeship under Jeremiah Dummer in 1696.
Ten years later he was married to Elizabeth Kilby and carried on his
trade, advertising as a "Goldsmith" in the Boston News-Letter from time to
time. His son, William, Jr., served apprenticeship under him and continued
his silversmithing business after the elder Cowell retired in 1728 to
become an innholder. Cowell's estate was appraised by another well-known
Colonial silversmith--Jacob Hurd.
