Vanderspiegel, Jacobus
(1668-1708)
Collection: European Collection
Specialty: Silver
Jacobus Van der Spiegel was the son of Laurens Van der Speigel, and took
up his trade in New York City about 1685. He married Ann Sanders and saw
military duty in upper New York State when the French invasion was
threatening the Albany frontier. He was commissioned an ensign in 1689 and
two years later is mentioned as captain. Back in his native city he was an
assessor for the West Ward of New York in 1694-95 and then held the office
of constable in 1698.

Van der Spiegel was admitted as a freeman in 1701 and continued his
business until 1705. His family was very prominent in social life; and his
older brother, Johannes, was also a silversmith in the same city until his
death in 1716.
