Tyler, Andrew
(1692-1741)
Collection: American Collection
Specialty: Silver
Born in Boston, the son of Thomas Tyler, Andrew began his apprenticeship
at an early age, the exact date being unknown. He married Miriam
Pepperell, sister of Sir William Pepperell, and during the period 1720-27
served as a scavenger (toll collector), assessor, and fire-ward for the
city of Boston. He served three years as a selectman (1729-32) and was a
member of the church in Brattle Square. Tyler's daughter married Captain
David Ochterlony, and their son later became a distinguished British
general in India.

Another Boston silversmith, Knight Leverett (1703-1753), was apprenticed
to Andrew Tyler. Tyler's brothers, William and John, were both pewterers.
