Burt, John
(1691-1745)
Collection: American Collection
Specialty: Silver
One of the most diligent makers of church silver in early New England,
John Burt is believed to have been trained as a silversmith by John Coney.
He was married to Abigail Cheever in 1714. Burt's civic activities
included service at various times as constable, tithingman, and clerk for
the market. Among his numerous children, three sons, Samuel (1724-54),
William (1726-52), and Benjamin (1729-1805), were silversmiths, having
learned the trade from their father. Two of them Samuel and Benjamin, are
represented in this catalogue.
