Boelen, Jacob
(1654-1729)
Collection: American Collection
Specialty: Silver
Born in Amsterdam, Holland, Jacob emigrated with his parents to New York
in 1659. He was admitted as a member of the Dutch Church in 1676 and three
years later married Katharina Klock. Boelen's name appears a number of
times on the City records, showing that from 1685 to 1694 he was assessor
for the North Ward in New York City and was elected alderman of that same
ward in 1695, and again in 1697.

He was admitted as a freeman on July 19, 1698, and upon his death in 1729,
his shop near Hanover Square was willed to his son, Henricus, who carried
on his father's trade until 1755. Jacob's brother, Hendrick, was also a
New York silversmith, but died some 38 years before him.
