Perhaps reflecting his own background growing up in Cleveland, Texas,
artist Garland Swinney has focused on paintings that display the
self-sufficiency of rural life along with the icons that represent it,
like Covered Bridge, which is included in the Norton's permanent
collection. Born in 1961, Swinney won his first art award when only
fifteen. He received his artistic training from North Harris County
College, later serving as an instructor in watercolor there. Since then,
he has traveled extensively throughout the American South, depicting
various landscape subjects with an intriguing interplay of light and
shadow.
