Kelly was so attracted to this home that he painted it three times (all three are owned by the Norton). The original house is located in Arabi, a then somewhat-derelict section of New Orleans, and is one of two near-identical homes built there in 1909 by an eccentric female steamboat captain for her retirement. Of particular interest to Kelly is the incorporation of many decorative elements typical of a steamboat wheelhouse, including fluted funnels and portholes.

This house stands near the Mississippi River levee, allowing the pictorial opportunities Kelly has seized upon in this work. While the painting is modeled on the actual house, Kelly has altered it to narrow the structure and emphasize its verticality, further heightening its resemblance to an actual steamboat. It also features swags made of wooden balls threaded on rope draped between upper veranda posts which, swaying in the wind, would suggest the motion of a boat.
