The Rope Corral was one of twelve illustrations done by Remington to accompany the Theodore Roosevelt article, "The Round-Up" in the April, 1888 issue of Century Magazine. Roosevelt wrote this description for the piece: "A rope corral is rigged by stretching a rope from each wheel of one side of the wagon, making a V-shaped space, into which the saddle horses are driven. Certain men stand around to keep them inside, while the others catch the horses: many outfits have one man to do all the roping."

Rose has an Armand Marseille bisque head, brown hair, and brown eyes. She wears a mourning gown of French silk and black organza brimmed in black net and taffeta. Kelly's attraction to fine automobiles as well as grand houses is evident in this 1975 depiction of the plantation house at Rosemont in Alabama of which he did at least two paintings. By the time Kelly visited it, the house was derelict, but he reimagines it as it looked in its heyday. He particularly admired its mirador, or lookout turret. What seems to be the owner showing off his vintage cars is simply Kelly using the opportunity to depict some of his own favorite pre-World War I models.
