Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was the first president of the Royal Academy of Art (founded in 1768) and a leading Neo-Classical painter, particularly noted for his portraits. Born the son of a clergyman/schoolmaster, Reynolds received his early training in art as an apprentice, but was largely self-taught through his travels to major Italian art centers like Rome, Florence, and Venice as a young man. By the 1750s, he was established in London as a major society portraitist and knighted by George III in 1768. Born in Germany, Adolph Alexander Weinman immigrated to the United States with his mother when he was 10. As a young man, he studied at the Art Students League under the premiere American sculptor of the time, Augustus Saint-Gaudens. His first professional acclaim came in 1904 with The Destiny of the Red Man, featured that year at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis and currently on display on our grounds. Ironically, Henry Merwin Schrady is best known for his sculpture atop the Grant Memorial on Capitol Square. Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) is best known as the commander of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. His family was imbued with the concept of service to their country.
