The first and only president of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis was captured by Union troops on May 10, 1865. Indicted for treason, he was imprisoned for 2 years, and then released on bail. He visited Canada, Cuba, and Europe, but returned to the U.S. in 1869 when the prosecution dropped the case. Hired as president of the Carolina Life Insurance Company in Memphis that same year, he was elected to the U.S. Senate again in 1875, but refused the office, having been barred from it by the 14th Amendment.
