Joseph Eggleston Johnston (1807-1891) was the highest-ranking regular army officer to resign and join the Confederacy; some considered him more capable than Lee. Johnston''s resentment over what he considered men of less experience and ability being given higher rank inhibited his performance during the war. During the winter of 1861-62, he commanded the Department of Northern Virginia and engaged in what critics called a "phony war" with Union commander George B. McClellan. Wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines, he was succeeded by Robert E. Lee and afterward given charge of the Department of the West. After the war, he...

Josephine has a German bisque head with brown hair and brown eyes. She wears a green satin and velvet suit with a "peg top" satin draped skirt. The back of her skirt has a pleated insert to give her more freedom of movement. Her jacket is in the dolman style with fur trim. In addition, she has fur trim on her hat and carries a fur muff. With these she wears black shoes. The peg top initially became popular in 1908 when there was a revival of an earlier men's style of peg-top trousers. Women later wore those loose-topped trousers as...

Josie has a German bisque head with brown hair and blue eyes. She wears an aigrette of birds of paradise feathers as an ornament in her hair, though the Audubon Societies were rapidly driving these from style in order to protect rare species of birds. For her evening of entertainment, Josie wears a gold woolen cloth evening cape with a tiered collar. The cape is decorated with gold ball embroidery on net trim. Under the cape, she wears an evening gown of gold metallic lace over a petticoat of cream-colored taffeta with stripes of green and rose. And to demonstrate her successful career, Josie also...

Judith has a German bisque head with blonde hair and blue eyes. Following the French Revolution, powdering the hair went rapidly out of style and wigs were no longer widely worn except in certain conservative institutions like, for example, the British court system. Looser, naturally colored curls become the most popular hair style; Judith's hair is styled in the cadogan style, clubbed at the back and loose at the sides.. She is wearing a new style called the caraco gown, which creates the effect of a small bustle by using a peplum that extends in back over a cul de Paris (see Henriette 1780). Her gown...

Martin Johnson Heade seems to have first become interested in the tropics because of his friend Frederic Church's monumental work, Heart of the Andes. He made his first trip south to Brazil in 1863 where, over the course of a year, he created a series of 40 small Luminist works featuring hummingbirds and orchids. Heade followed up with trips to Nicaragua, Colombia, Panama, and Jamaica, each time adding more lush foliage and tropical birds into his repertoire. His move to St. Augustine, Florida in 1883 cemented his focus on the surrounding tropical marshland and the flora and fauna that filled...
