This forest scene, like others by Van Ruisdael, is not intended to be a pictorial record of an actual scene, but a carefully thought-out composition, offering a variety of subtle contrasts in the cloud formations, plant and tree forms, and the play of light. The most celebrated of the great 17th century Dutch landscape painters, Jacob Isaackszoon van Ruisdael was born in Haarlem in the Netherlands where he received his early artistic training from his father, Isaak van Ruysdael (1599 1677), and uncle, the famous Salomon van Ruysdael (ca. 1600/03 1670). As all artists know, viewing things or people from a low angle makes them appear larger, more powerful, and occasionally ominous. That viewpoint adds to the power of this work, providing the house with a sense of presence evoking both grandeur and threat, despite its apparent abandonment. It illustrates Kellys contention that whatever the subject, either imaginative or otherwise, I like to compose it not only of the visible but [also] the invisible people or things once there.

Like many artists, Kelly frequently returned to the same subjects, particularly when he found them rich in artistic possibilities. The stunning setting and precarious placement of this house made it a popular image for him, encapsulating the qualities that critic Colin Amery claimed to have discovered in Kellys work: "[It] combines a sense of permanence and decay, of safety and threat, and a concentration on beauty despite the dark threats beyond the edge of the frame."
