An intimate view of a Native American family, Three Generations reveals Russell's powerful empathy for their way of life. Throughout his career, Russell repeatedly painted scenes of Indian culture with which white viewers could sympathize - scenes of courtship, of women going about their daily chores, of the efforts involved in moving camp (or changing homes), and most of all, scenes like this emphasizing the role of family. What parents, no matter his or her own ethnic background, could fail to feel a thrill of recognition and identification with the sight of a child playing in his mothers arms while...

Russell's summer home, Bull Head Lodge, was located at the foot of Lake McDonald in Montana. His old friend John E. Lewis built the Lewis Glacier Hotel at the head of the lake. In 1919, on one of their annual fall hunts, the discussion turned to religion. Challenged to present his views, Russell said he would think about it and answer them later. That answer arrived in the form of three magnificent watercolors, one for each of the men. This painting of The Three Wise Men was his gift to John Lewis. Few painters have so touchingly rendered the mixture...

After years of self-study at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Barye's sculptures put his knowledge of anatomy to good use, emphasizing the musculature of animals in conflict and creating far more realistic portraits of them than the static, posed figures of Academic art. His early work was not successful and he supported his family for eight years by working for a jeweler, creating small animal images, but continued to study various naturalists in his spare time. In 1831, he finally had a breakthrough; Tiger Devouring a Gavial was a sensation at the Paris Salon and won...

The young Baryes studies with the Italian sculptor Bozio and the French painter Gros convinced him that the classical conventions of the Academy which then dominated European art were both inadequate and counterproductive in terms of realistically depicting animals. Instead, he began a self-study of various naturalists, attended dissections, and made regular visits to the Jardin des Plantes with his friend, Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix, to observe and draw the exotic animals on display there, resulting in the small paintings like Tiger Reclining seen here. Though he is more widely known for the artistic mastery of his bronzes, these paintings...

One of his final paintings, this is also considered by many critics to be one of his finest. Set at the mouth of a stream known as "The Medicine River" close to where it enters the Missouri, it features an Indian hunting party forestalled from following the tracks of their quarry by his or her entry into the water. Unlike the vivid action of many of Russell's paintings, this one instead depicts the tension of action held in check. Ripples reveal the recent flight of 3 ducks, while the lead pony is arrested in motion as its rider searches the...
