Leonie has a Simon & Halberg bisque head with brown hair and brown eyes double-check eyes. She wears a patterned brocade coat with green braid and tassels trimming; this material was hand-woven on a loom in France and Mrs. Gray paid an import duty of ten dollars in the 1940s in order to use it for this costume. It incorporates metallic thread creating a raised pattern in the silk material. The word brocade comes from the Spanish brocado, similar to the Italian broccato; both drive from the original Latin word broccus for projecting, a reference to its raised pattern. Louise has a German bisque head and a kid body, with brown hair and blue eyes. She is wearing clothing based upon a chapter on the French settlers of Louisiana in the History of American Costume. Clearly, this would have been her holiday best, given the relative expense involved in wearing batiste and cotton fabrics, which were far more expensive than wool. Her outfit begins with a French batiste chemise over which she wears a yellow cotton skirt and laced bodice (possibly eliminating the need for a corset) trimmed with black embroidery.
