Certain common interests seem to show up in artists throughout the centuries. One of these is the attraction of artists to theatrical design. That was particularly true of French Academic master Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier. A naturally dramatic character himself, Meissonier prepared for most of his major paintings by creating elaborate sets and costumes and hiring models to pose in them, sometimes including himself among them. Given that proclivity, it is not surprising that he chose to work for the professional theatre as well.
