Born in Carrara, Italy, Lazzerini studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti and in 1852 won 2nd prize for a relief Achille che trascinia il corpo di Patrocio. In 1853, he moved to Rome and began working in his brother-in-law's studio, primarily on public monuments and portrait busts. From 1889-1893, he was the Director of the Academy in Carrara. This portrait bust commemorates James Ewell Brown Stuart (1833-1864), probably the most famous cavalryman of the Civil War.
