Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was the first president of the Royal Academy of Art (founded in 1768) and a leading Neo-Classical painter, particularly noted for his portraits. Born the son of a clergyman/schoolmaster, Reynolds received his early training in art as an apprentice, but was largely self-taught through his travels to major Italian art centers like Rome, Florence, and Venice as a young man. By the 1750s, he was established in London as a major society portraitist and knighted by George III in 1768.
