When the Civil War began, Lee was put in command of all of Virginia's forces, but once the Confederate States Army was formed, he was named one of its first 5 full generals. At first assumed too timid, he was termed "Granny Lee", but after the Seven Days Battles in 1862, his men revered him as "Marse Robert". On January 31, 1865, Lee was promoted to general-in-chief of the Confederate forces, but by then the South was clearly losing the war.
