Irish-born painter John Blennerhasset Martin did at least two portraits of Chief Justice John Marshall in his judicial robes. John Marshall (1755-1835) was the 4th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, serving from February 4, 1801 until his death in 1835. Previously, he had served in the House of Representatives and as John Adam's Secretary of State. He eventually became not only the longest serving Chief Justice in Supreme Court history, but also established the courts exercise of judicial review, the power to strike down laws that violate the Constitution.
