After graduating from Carleton College where the focus on abstraction caused him to avoid a career in art, Stephen Elrick joined the Peace Corps, served on the staff of a reform school, and attended graduate school at the University of Chicago before a chance invitation by his sister to create a bird sculpture for her finally led him into the field of art.
