Though this landscape shows Dores ability to paint in the expressive mode of the French Barbizon artists who remained popular and had gained key positions on the jury of the Paris Salon in the mid-19th century, he became far better known for his more imaginative engravings based on popular works of literature, including Dantes Inferno, Don Quixote, and Paradise Lost.
