After living in the Channel Islands and the art colony at St. Ives on the Cornish coast, Frederick Waugh began to make a name for himself with his English seascapes. But after two of them were rejected by the Royal Academy of Art in 1907, he returned to America where the same works met with acclaim. A later sojourn with his half-sister on the New England coast led to scenes like this one.
