One of the most prominent artists of the latter Hudson River School painters, Bierstadt exemplified the American ideal: the immigrant who came to American and became a self-made success. Born in Prussia in 1830, Bierstadt arrived in America at the age of 2. Though self-taught and having only a rudimentary knowledge of painting, he began offering art lessons in 1851. He managed to make enough money to study in Dusseldorf for 3 years, and then returned to America, signing on with an early geological survey trip to the Rocky Mountains.
