The younger brother of Rosa Bonheur, Auguste, like his sister, received his early training from his father and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1845 with Enfants aux Champs (Children in the Field). While his early work was of genre scenes and portraits, his sisters success as an animalier persuaded him to do similar paintings; he often copied her style and even her subject matter, as can be seen in the similarities between Cattle at Rest and Rosas Boeufs et Taureaux de la Race du Cantal only the landscape has really changed.
