Following the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the population in France and other European nations increasingly moved into cities where burgeoning factories and markets provided more employment for the lower class and investment opportunities for the middle class. The first apartment buildings went up all over Paris and the streets were crowded with horse trolleys and foot traffic. New generations were growing up who'd never been outside the city or seen a cow before it was steak.
