There are several areas around the pond in which to sit or stand and enjoy the beauty of the hillside leading up to the Gallery while listening to the rush and gurgle of the waters flowing into the pond. This is one of our guests’ favorite areas in which to take photographs, particularly wedding pictures. After enjoying the pond, visitors can continue following the circular path up the opposite section of the hillside where they will encounter the powerful bronze sculpture, “Destiny of the Red Man” by Adolph A. Weinman.
Proceeding along the ridge of the hill through more gently wooded venues, our guests make the acquaintance of “Il Porcellino” or “The Piglet”, a bronze boar cast in 1857 by Italian master Clemente Papi. Along the rear of the Gallery, three spirits, two fauns and a cupbearer, watch over the grounds, blessing them with fruitfulness and beauty. The path continues between blossom-filled flower beds that include pansies, agapanthus, and dwarf pittosporum until it reaches the original starting point on the south lawn.
Here in the midst of city life, one can find the pleasures and consolations of a walk in the countryside and take a break from the hurly-burly of the day. Please join us in the gardens of the R.W. Norton Art Gallery.
