Among the oldest works in the Norton are pieces from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia and six tapestries dating from the 16th century which once graced the palace of a King of France.

It`s Scorpio Season! 🦂♏
.
Elusive and mysterious, Scorpio is one of the most misunderstood signs of the zodiac. Scorpio is a water sign that uses emotional energy as fuel, cultivating powerful wisdom through both the physical and unseen realms. In fact, Scorpio derives extraordinary courage from its psychic abilities, which is what makes this sign one of the most complicated and dynamic of the zodiac.

“Pontchatrain Summers” by Harmani Johnson

.
About the Artist: Harmani J. is a self-taught visual artist and the founder of Blu Magnolia Art, a New Orleans-born creative brand rooted in culture, storytelling, and southern soul. Born on January 10, 1997, Harmani began painting at the age of 15 and officially launched her professional career by 18, using acrylic paint on canvas to capture the rhythm, color, and legacy of Louisiana life.
Her work explores New Orleans themes—from custom portraits and jazz icons to vibrant street scenes, natural landscapes, and everyday childhood memories. With each brushstroke, Harmani preserves the spirit of her hometown and uplifts the stories that shaped her.
In 2018, at just 20 years old, Harmani made history as the youngest and first female artist to design the official Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club Mardi Gras poster. That same year, she live painted at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Gala in honor of Fats Domino, and returned to live paint again in 2019. Her tribute to jazz legends earned her a spot in the Louisiana State Museum’s Jazz Exhibition, where she painted a celebrated portrait of Louis Prima.
Her work was also recognized with the Juror Award at the 2018 Red River Revel Festival in Shreveport. Today, through Blu Magnolia Art, Harmani continues to merge community, heritage, and art—creating pieces that speak directly to the soul of New Orleans.
About the Piece: This painting is a tribute to my childhood in New orleans. A water day on the levee by Lake Pontchartrain in the summer of 2001. My sister and I, dressed in oversized tees, pigtails, and “TRU” bandanas, stood in front of our dad’s 95’ Impala after a day full of running, laughing, and getting soaked. I’ll never forget how my older sister stood there cheesing from ear to ear, a mouth full of silver teeth shining in the sun. It was pure joy - no worries, just family, love, and summer heat. This is my New Orleans.

Happy Dia De Los Muertos!💀🎉
Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. The holiday and celebrations have Aztec origins, tracing back to the goddess Mictecacihuatl (Lady of the Dead). Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their family members who have passed. These altars are decorated with yellow marigold flowers, photos, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear prayers, smell their foods, and join in the celebrations!
A `calavera de azúcar" is a sugar skull. These skulls are molded out of sugar and adorned with colorful beads, foils, icing, glitter, feathers, rhinestones, and more. Those who celebrate write their deceased loved one`s name on the forehead and place it on an ofrenda.
The iconic Catrina skull makeup has its origins in Mexico’s pre-Columbian past, with influences from Aztec and Mayan traditions. However, it became widely recognized during the 20th century, particularly through the work of Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada. Posada’s famous etching, “La Calavera Catrina,” or “The dapper lady’s skull,” depicted a female skeleton with a plumed hat, satirizing the Mexican elite’s emulation of European fashions. Catrina makeup isn’t solely about death. It is a vibrant celebration of life, as it adorns the living during the Día de los Muertos festivities. Signifying that life and death are interconnected, and the departed should be celebrated rather than mourned.
