About
The Norton’s permanent collection is quite extensive, including the works of over 100 artists... from Renaissance Old Masters, to modernist iconoclasts and contemporary neo-realists.
In addition, our museum possesses hundreds of sculptures ranging from miniatures and maquettes to life-size pieces in media including bronze, silver, marble, and wood.
Among the oldest works in the Norton are pieces from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Persia and six tapestries dating from the 16th century which once graced the palace of a King of France.
Decorative arts are also featured throughout the museum, including works in porcelain, pressed and blown glass, and 18th - 19th century silver.

On this day in 1793, King Louis XVI of France was executed by guillotine after being convicted of treason against the French Republic. His death marked a dramatic turning point in the French Revolution, signaling the end of centuries of absolute monarchy in France and the rise of radical republican rule.
Executed in what is now the Place de la Concorde in Paris, Louis XVI’s death sent shockwaves across Europe and intensified revolutionary fervor at home ushering in a period known as the Reign of Terror. A single moment that forever altered the course of French and European history.

Clementine Hunter (1887 – 1988) lived and worked most of her life on the Melrose cotton plantation near Natchitoches, Louisiana. She did not start painting until the 1940s when she was already a grandmother. Her first painting was executed on a window shade using paints left behind by a plantation visitor. She used whatever surfaces she could find, drawing and painting on canvas, wood, gourds, paper, snuff boxes, wine bottles, iron pots, cutting boards, and plastic milk jugs.
.
Working from memory, Hunter recorded everyday life in and around the plantation, from work in the cotton fields to baptisms and funerals. She rendered her figures in expressionless profile and disregarded formal perspective and scale. Though she first exhibited in 1949, Hunter did not garner public attention until the 1970s when both the Museum of American Folk Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibited her paintings.
.
Come and check out Hunter`s "An Outdoor Cookout" and "A Funeral Procession" both on display now!
